As more and more people take the plunge into a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle, never has this genre of food been more exciting or inventive.

It seems, on most part, gone are the days of the two standard choices of cauliflower curry or baked aubergine! More and more menus in pubs and restaurants all over the country are embracing a wider, much more enticing variety of vegan and vegetarian options.

Yet, still I hear my vegan and vegetarian friends complain that you can’t get good vegan Chinese food. I feel like they must have been looking in all the wrong places. The choice of vegan and vegetarian Chinese food at places like Chung Ying Cantonese Restaurant in the heart of Birmingham’s China Town is vast, original and super exciting!

Whether you’re a fan of pure vegetable based dishes only or vegan ‘meat’ fare, this is definitely vegan Chinese food not to be missed. I am not the only one to have noticed! Claudia Jesse on the ‘Off Menu’ podcast stated that Chung Ying’s vegan ‘duck pancakes’ is her dream starter. You only have to taste it to understand why. Bean curd sheets, beautifully deep fried to recreate the same satisfaction you get from a deep fried, shredded duck is not only creative but really delicious!

Other inventive ideas give you the mouth feel of something synonymous with a meat item; using a sugar cane in the centre of a ‘wing’ of vegan ‘chicken’ for example. Vegan chicken wings at their best!

Tofu skin deep fried and tossed in a rich, spicy sauce gives you the same texture and tastiness of crispy shredded beef. I’m a meat eater, but I prefer this version.

They don’t skimp on the pure vegetable options either, with at least 4 aubergine dishes alone!

These are just a few of over fifty delicious and creative dishes available at Chung Ying.
